Governmental consolidation is at present an issue in Atlanta, Buffalo, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Milwaukee, and Pittsburgh.Combined services may lead to downsizing, which can harm the quality of services, said Summer Minnick, the director of state affairs for the Michigan Municipal League.“Municipalities are in the business of providing services,” she said. It takes people to pick up the garbage, it takes people to plow the streets, it takes police officers to have a public safety department.Although that dissolution has not yet occurred, the Civic Federation continues to support legislation to do so.The Civic Federation previously wrote several times on the topic of government consolidation as the voters in the City of Evanston eventually decided to dissolve its coterminous township.
